As 33-old Adeniyi Olaewe writhes in pain at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital’s emergency and accident unit, he struggles between confusion and gratitude.
For Olaewe, an estate agent, who survived the attack by a mystery shooter, who left him with two gunshot injuries on his chest, his confusion is about why anybody would want to kill him. On the other hand, doctors have told him he is lucky to be alive.
One could tell that he was in terrible pain as he sat on his bed to tell our correspondent his story.
“Every movement I make in my body is with serious pain. It is even very difficult for me to raise my right arm. Some bullets are still locked on my right chest. Doctors said if they rush to take them out. I might die. So, they are simply waiting for the right time.
“I don’t know what wrong I have done to anybody. On May 2 around 10pm, I was driving to a construction site at Lakowe Village in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos. There were two other colleagues in the vehicle with me.We were taking food to some of our colleagues at the site.
“We were around Ajah when an SUV swerved suddenly towards me. It occurred to me immediately that the driver of the vehicle did it deliberately. I was trying to see who it was. I did not understand what he was trying to do. I swerved my vehicle to another direction, the other vehicle again moved closer.
“Before I could find out what the problem was, I started hearing gunshots, just as I thought that they might be shooting at us, I felt some hot pain rip into my chest. I stopped abruptly and managed to run out of the vehicle, yet the shooter kept shooting at our direction.
“We all ran out of the vehicle and went to hide around a bush path close to the road. Luckily for us, they stopped shooting and drove off. They probably did not come after us because it was dark. After they left, we quickly called our boss on the phone and explained what happened. We told him where we were hiding and he later came with some other people to pick us up.”
our SOURCE learnt that had Olaewe been some minutes late, it might have been fatal for the young man, who had steadily lost a lot of blood and became weak by the time help came.
“They had to first take us to the Elemero Police Division where we lodged a complaint and were able to get a police report to take to the hospital for treatment,” he said.
Asked what more details he could remember about the shooting, he said he noticed that the shooter was sitting behind the driver. He said at least two people were in pursuit of them after they ran off. But could not make out how many they were in total.
“I still don’t feel safe. I don’t know what those came after us wanted. The police should please go after these people and fish them out. That is the only way I can live my life and not continue to look over my shoulders. If not for the grace of God, we would not be alive today. I don’t even know how we are able to survive,” he said.
OUR source learnt that some of the bullet also hit one of Olaewe’s companions,OjoYekini, in the chest and hands.
Yekini on his part, said he remembered hearing one of the assailants say “Femi, don’t pursue them again, leave them alone.”
“We heard their conversation and I know this man and I am ready to confront him,” Yekini said.
He refused to clarify who this Femi is and what relationship existed between them before the attack. But he said he had given the police the necessary details on him.
“Their mission was to kill us. I want police to come to our rescue because I don’t want to die; also Femi should be arrested to face prosecution. If the police called me to come and testify against this Femi I will do it, because I can recognise him.”
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Dolapo Badmus, who confirmed the story, said the victims were attacked along Oko Olomi Village.
“The case is under a discreet investigation,” she said.
