Lagos – The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday called on Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode to repair portions of the Ikorodu-Sagamu Road to alleviate the suffering of over 42 communities, estates and industries along the axis.
This followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Mr Sanai Agunbiade and seconded by Mr Tunde Braimoh, Chairman, House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, under matter of urgent public importance. Agunbiade (APC-Ikorodu I) said that the step had become imperative considering the disaster the road could bring to residents and economic activities in the area. He said; “The road is in a very terrible condition, it connects Ikorodu to Sagamu. It is so damaged that unless care is taken, it can lead to loss of lives. “Our people cannot wait for the Federal Government to fix the road. “We want to call on the governor to direct all relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the state to help do palliative on this road,” he said. Braimoh said that there was need for an urgent intervention by the state government, stressing that the road was germane to the economic activities of the state.
The lawmaker also urged the state government to give attention to the road at the entrance of the Magodo Estate. Contributing to the debate, Mr Nurudeen Saka-Solaja (APC- Ikorodu II), said about 45 industries were located along the Ikorodu-Sagamu corridor. He said that the busy road had, however, been abandoned for long. Also speaking, Mr Lanre Ogunyemi, the Chairman, House Committee on Education, urged industries along the corridor to wake up to their corporate social responsibility. Mr Abiodun Tobun, the Chairman, House Committee on Works and Infrastructure, also contributed to the debate. He said: “Most of the federal roads in Lagos are suffering and the paucity of funds cannot allow the state to fix all of them.” The Speaker of the House, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, who noted that the poor state of some roads had led to the loss of several lives, urged the state to do something urgently. Obasa said that the state government had spent billions of naira managing federal roads, and was awaiting refunds from the Federal Government. “We will continue to call on the Federal Government to do the needful, we cannot close our eyes to all these roads,” the speaker said. The House also called on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to wake up to its responsibility on federal roads in the state. The lawmakers equally urged President Muhammadu Buhari to refund the money the state government had spent in maintaining federal roads in the state.
